Background

Over 450,000 international students are studying in Canada and the number is growing
constantly. Students choose Canada over many other developed nations because of the quality
of education, diversity in culture and high standard of living.

Individuals who study in Canada receive top-quality and internationally-recognized education. It
prepares them for their professional endeavors in Canada or abroad. If you want to study in
Canada and you are not a Canadian citizen or a Permanent Resident, then you must have a
valid study permit to start education in a designated learning institute. Before you apply for a
study permit, you must be authorized at a school, college or a university in Canada, ie, the
student must provide a proof of acceptance into an approved institution, proof of adequate funds
to pay for tuition and living costs, and make evident the intention to return home upon the
completion of studies. The permit can be obtained from your own country or the country where
you legally reside and also, ensuring that your passport is valid until the end of your study
period.

A study permit is a document that is issued by Immigration, refugees and citizenship Canada
(IRCC) that allows a foreign national to study in a limited time, generally at a specific Canadian
education institution, in a specific program. Study permits will only be granted to individuals who
have been accepted as students at Designated Learning Institutions. Moreover, students will be
required to pursue their studies and make progress towards completing their academic
program. The Designated Learning Institutions will report frequently on enrollment to IRCC. In
addition, full time students on a valid permit will be allowed to work up to 20 hours per week.

Permit Extension

Once a student has finished his education as per the valid study permit, you may want to study
further and you may be eligible for an extension of your study permit. To keep studying, you
need to know:

When to Apply:

You should apply to extend your permit at least 30 days before it expires. Make sure your
passport doesn’t expire at the same time. You can’t extend your study permit beyond your
passport’s expiry date.

If you apply before your permit expires, you can stay in Canada under the same conditions as
your current study permit until we make a decision.

You should apply to extend your study permit if you plan to travel outside Canada and your
permit will expire while you’re travelling.

If you’ll finish your studies earlier than you expected: Your Study permit will expire on the ate
marked on the valid permit or 90 days after the day you complete your studies, whichever
comes first.

If you’ll finish your studies later than you expected: You must apply to extend your study
permit at least 30 days before the original expiry date.
