In a significant policy change, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has removed the bonus Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points previously awarded for arranged employment in Express Entry. This update, effective March 2025, will impact how candidates are ranked in the pool and could shift the overall competitiveness of the immigration system.

What Has Changed?

Until now, applicants with a valid job offer(LMIA) from a Canadian employer could receive 50 or 200 additional CRS points, depending on the position. These bonus points gave many candidates a significant advantage during Express Entry draws.

Under the new update, these additional points for arranged employment have been eliminated. While job offers can still strengthen a candidate’s profile in other ways—such as improving provincial nomination chances—they no longer directly increase CRS scores.

Why Did IRCC Make This Change?

The decision aims to ensure a more level playing field by focusing more on core human capital factors like education, work experience, and language proficiency. It also aligns the Express Entry system more closely with the economic needs of Canada by emphasizing long-term settlement potential over employer-tied employment.

What Does This Mean for Express Entry Candidates?

  • Increased Importance of Other CRS Factors: Language test scores, education credentials, and Canadian work experience now carry even more weight.
  • Strategic Profile Updates: Candidates must now re-evaluate their profiles and explore other pathways, such as Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs).
  • More Competitive Pool: With bonus points removed, the CRS cut-off may fluctuate, giving more balanced opportunities to a broader range of candidates.
